I’m so Flattened

For this piece I was interested in creating a garment (skirt) that would create an illusion of flatness on the body.  I wanted it to have a cartoon like feeling, like being run over by a cement roller.  The coloured parts on the skirt are graduated hand-dyed to create movement.

I am interested in the historical fact that garments are often not created to mimic the form of the body but to change it’s natural shape, it’s silhouette.  After completing the wool cape and skirt I felt something else was needed to interrupt the totality. I added a silk floor length, hand-dyed undergarment to create a flow, a waterfall running through the blackness
